Clinic Description
The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to inmates struggling with alcohol or opioid misuse. A law requiring all New York correctional facilities to offer MAT went into effect in 2022.
MAT uses FDA-approved medication, such as Suboxone, to help patients reduce withdrawal symptoms, limit cravings, and lower the chances of a fatal overdose when inmates are released. Often, MAT is paired with counseling and other evidence-based addiction treatment to help participants create a substance-free lifestyle without medical help.
The Bureau of Prisons also operates drug rehab programs for inmates and Community Treatment Services (CTS) that provide ongoing treatment as part of the reentry process as their sentence ends. These programs may also offer MAT and a continuation of evidence-based treatment.
Treatment while incarcerated does not require health insurance, but services offered during reentry may accept private health insurance plans such as Humana, Ambetter, Cigna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and Aetna. Because insurance plans vary, be sure to verify coverage information and out of network benefits with your insurer.
